Rough Gems is Union Hall’s annual open call and collaborative curatorial program. Each year we select three teams to showcase a pop-up exhibition in our gallery. Exclamation Point. is the first exhibition in the 2021 Rough Gems series. With Rough Gems, Union Hall hopes to impact the lives of emerging artists and curators with a platform for exhibition that is inclusive, supportive, and committed to the artists we serve by paying them for exhibitions and performances.
Curated by Alli Lemon, the works included in Exclamation Point. explore play, joy, rigor, and what it means to make a “painting” in 2021.
About the Artists + Curator
-
Amelia Briggs!
holds a BFA from Indiana University and an MFA from the University of Memphis. She is currently director of the David Lusk Gallery in Nashville, TN. Amelia Briggs is a traditionally trained painter, but gave up the brush in favor of material exploration towards the end of her time at the University of Memphis. Her love of mixing color and the forms created by paint directly from the tube, have inspired her “inflatable works.”
-
Jamie Earnest!
is based in Pittsburgh, PA, and received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon with an emphasis in painting and was a fellow at The Yale Summer School of Art at Norfolk. Earnest “broke up with painting” in 2019 and has since been creating wall-hanging sculptures or “center-pieces,” based on her Southern upbringing. These curious objects combine a multitude of materials and involve cheeky text inspired by the women who raised her.
-
Liz Langyher!
received her BFA in ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016. Currently pursuing an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder, her work explores the childhood experience. Her “memory bundles” question the balance of subjective and objective memory retention and our tendency to exaggerate both the positive and negative aspects of our lives.
-
Marcella Marsella!
is a current MFA candidate at CU Boulder. She received a BFA from The Tyler School of Art. Her work is concerned with ocean conservation and she uses reclaimed materials to create massive collages which overwhelm the viewer, forcing them to consider human impact on our planet.

Suchitra Mattai!
is a multi-disciplinary artist working in Denver, Colorado. Suchitra was born in Guyana, South America, but has also lived in Halifax and Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Philadelphia, New York City, Minneapolis, and Udaipur, India. These diverse natural and cultural environments have greatly influenced her work and research. While her practice includes a wide range of materials and ideas, her primary interests include 1) the complex relationship between the natural and artificial worlds and 2) the questioning of historical and authoritative narratives, especially those surrounding colonialism. Through painting, fiber, drawing, collage, installation, video, and sculpture, she weaves narratives of “the other,” invoking fractured landscapes and reclaiming cultural artifacts (often colonial and domestic in nature).
-
Katie McColgan!
A traditionally trained ceramicist, Katie McColgan holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is currently a master’s student at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her work explores the everyday through vigorous and exacting replication of household objects. During the COVID lockdown, McColgan returned to painting because of space limitations in her home. This inspired to create forms which could also live on the walls. She is currently hand-tufting rugs and using the remnants to create separate wall-hangings.
