Matter is Minimum: opening reception

  • Union Hall 1750 Wewatta Street, Suite 144 Denver, CO, 80202 United States (map)

Union Hall is pleased to present Matter is Minimum, the first exhibition focusing on the multidisciplinary project They Rage, organized by photographer Summer Taylor and facilitator Shammai Mading. They Rage began as a collaborative project aimed at examining the ubiquitous nature of anger, and understanding the complexities of processing this emotion in relation to individual’s backgrounds and experiences. They Rage focuses on four core questions posed to both participants in, and viewers of, their work:

  • How would you define anger?

  • How has anger shown up in your life?

  • What are the key moments relevant to your experience of release today?

  • How has your community or society viewed your anger?

Matter is Minimum includes images and video made during the summer of 2020, when They Rage conducted a series of interviews with black and brown women and non-binary people in Denver, leading them through the four core questions and and creating a supportive space to document the individual experience of relating to their anger. The selection of images displayed in the Matter is Minimum exhibition, shared with consent of the subjects, hopes to shed light on the experience of anger brought up by the national social dialogue around race, police brutality, and injustice. In this exhibition, the participants in the They Rage project show a visceral display of humanity in order to seek validation and amplification of their voices.
