Perception Shift
January 20 — February 12, 2022

Virtual Curatorial Talk with Amy Hoagland - January 27, starting at 6 PM.

Rough Gems is Union Hall’s annual open call and collaborative curatorial program. Each year we select three teams to showcase a pop-up exhibition in our gallery. Perception Shift is the first exhibition in the 2022 Rough Gems series. With Rough Gems, Union Hall hopes to impact the lives of emerging artists and curators with a platform for exhibition that is inclusive, supportive, and committed to the artists we serve by paying them for exhibitions and performances.
Curated by Amy Hoagland, Perception Shift investigates how different materials — projected light, shadow, ceramic, graphite, glass, and metal — can work alongside each other to shift the viewer’s way of seeing.

Natalie Thedford
(she/her) is an artist from East Tennessee. She produces works composed of intricate textures inspired by her early exposure to manipulating fibers. Learning these techniques always involved an intimate interaction with the women in her life. By translating imagery of fiber crafts from something soft and flexible, into clay, which, once fired, is hard, rigid, and enduring, she gives space for further consideration of this woman’s work. Natalie has a BFA in 3D Art from the University of Tennessee. She has exhibited her work nationally, throughout Tennessee and Northern California. Natalie is currently pursuing her Masters of Fine Art in Art Practices from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
