Rough Gems is Union Hall’s annual open call and collaborative curatorial program. Each year we select three teams to showcase a pop-up exhibition in our gallery. Mirror Mirror is the second exhibition in the 2021 Rough Gems series. With Rough Gems, Union Hall hopes to impact the lives of emerging artists and curators with a platform for exhibition that is inclusive, supportive, and committed to the artists we serve by paying them for exhibitions and performances.
In conjunction with Denver’s Month of Photography celebration in March 2021, curators Genevieve Waller and Mary Grace Bernard present an exhibition of photography, collage and film works by six local artists. Referring to the well-known phrase of the evil stepmother in the Brothers Grimm version of Snow White, the exhibition title conjures ideas of representation, magic, power and narrative.
About the Artists + Curator
-
Román Anaya
Growing up in the state of Wyoming, being a member of the queer community, and being raised in an actively Catholic Mexican family play a large role in the work that Román Anaya creates. They find inspiration in dichotomies; the juxtaposition of two subjects that contradict one another inspire series that display how typically incongruous influences can create their own harmonies. Anaya examines traditional masculinity through an alternative lens by glorifying the queer identity and simultaneously challenging preconceived ideas about gender and sexuality.

Paula Gillen
Gillen’s artwork explores themes of psychology, social commentary and humorous disruptions of original and found imagery. Influenced by Surrealism, Feminism, and The Pictures Generation her work is satirical, irreverent, and playful. Her art practice includes collage and digital photomontage methods.
-
Stacy Platt
is a photographer, writer and educator living in Colorado. She uses photography to speak about vulnerability, memory, loss and the mundane experiences of life. Her work is characterized by an interest in exploring the multiple—and sometimes unreliable—versions of self and personal history that we all contain, as well as the contradictory threads of collective identity that serve to both constrain and connect us to one another.
-
Gabby Recny
is an activism-driven artist currently based in Denver, Colorado. She creates work to express stories unheard by deaf ears and beauty unseen by blind eyes to create social inclusion through creativity.
-
Emily Van Loan
is an experimental filmmaker and artist. They create diaristic, autobiographical works with the intention of fostering connections between audience and maker or perhaps within the audience.
-
Lauren Winges
is a visual artist, born and raised in Colorado. Her work takes shape in different modalities, but her main love is shooting film and making images in the darkroom. Her work seeks to express her curiosity and understanding of the human spirit, whether it be through life, decay, or death. Without formal training, Lauren is a self taught artist that has found guidance and inspiration in her mentors Alicia Bailey and the late John Schoenwalter. Her work has been displayed in local stores and cafes throughout Denver. She is currently working on her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and continues to explore the world through the lens of the camera.
