Rough Gems 2022 - Exhibition 1
Rough Gems is an annual open call and collaborative curatorial project at Union Hall. The goal of this ambitious rotating exhibition series is to showcase local curatorial and artistic talent by turning over Union Hall’s gallery space to emerging curators, inviting them to share an exhibition in an active and experimental environment and providing them tangible support in the form of time, space, mentorship, and funds. With Rough Gems, Union Hall hopes to impact the lives of emerging artists and curators with a platform for exhibition that is inclusive, supportive, and committed to the artists we serve by paying them for exhibitions and performances.

How does our perception shape our understanding of our surroundings? This exhibition, Perception Shift, investigates how different materials— projected light, shadow, ceramic, graphite, glass, and metal— can work alongside each other to shift the viewer’s way of seeing. The work presented from artists Allison Lemon, Natalie Thedford, Kimberley Bianca, Hala Abubaker and Andrea de Leon is connected through its exploration of reality and ability to alter the gaze of the viewer, to challenge us to see differently, and to free ourselves from expectations. Perception Shift seeks to guide viewers through an exploration of their own realities— to provoke a deeper understanding of ourselves in this world.
